Hey all, seems that it has been awhile since I've posted anything here.
The Not-quite-as-heartless-as-previously-supposed Siren and I are currently in California looking for a place to live. I've accepted a job with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and will begin in July after we get married. Since I have a Spring term course, this week (between semesters) was really the only chance we'd get to come out and look at places and let TNQAHAPSS see California (she's never been before).
LLNL is providing some nice relocation benefits, including paying for this trip (reimbursed after I start work), unfortunately since we're not married yet only my expenses would be covered. So we drove out rather than flying. They'll pay my mileage for driving here and back, and it really doesn't cost anymore to have a second person in the car. Chloe (my Honda Civic) is holding up well on the trip (though needs the bugs cleaned off the front end). The first tank of gas from Provo to Winnemucca, NV got 39+ mpg, and the second tank, from Winnemucca to Sunnyvale, got 42+ mpg.
We spent Monday looking at the two places that got the best reviews on apartmentratings.com. We got applications from them, filled them out and dropped them off on Tuesday. Neither place knows if they'll actually have any openings in July, but they took the applications, will process them, and put us on the waiting list. When they found out I'd be working for LLNL they were much more eager to accommodate our situation. It would seem that these Managers have understood that if your tenants can pass an FBI background check and are able to obtain a Top Secret level security clearance that they probably won't give you any trouble. So we're hoping that one or the other place will have an opening and let us know toward the end of May.
If neither has any spots, well... it gets trickier. All the other complexes that have reviews do not get great marks from the reviewers. We may end up renting a house or something. Our plan is to rent something for about 6 months, while we search for a house to buy. In those 6 months we'll be able to put together a down payment, research the area, become part of the LLNL credit union, and go through the entire process without getting stressed about needing a place to live quickly. There are quite a few foreclosures in the area which we will be able to pickup for cheap. The area we're looking at is called Mountain House, and has foreclosures listing in the low 200,000's which sold 4 years ago for 600,000+.
Hopefully we'll pick up something for "cheap" now, thing will recover, and in the future when we are re-evaluating our life situation we might be able to sell at a considerable profit if desired.
Oh, the wedding will be June 23. We're getting married in the Boston Temple. YAY!

Playing Ultimate
Playing Ultimate is one of my favorite pastimes. For those unfamiliar, the more common phrase of "Ultimate Frisbee" is a misnomer because "Frisbee" is trademarked. Therefore you simply play the game of "Ultimate" and it is played with "discs" and not "Frisbees".
Anyways, after a couple years of missing the deadlines for Orem Ultimate I managed to remember and sign up for Spring League again this year. A few weeks ago we had an initial team meeting and played a scrimmage which we won. Last week I was in Europe and missed our game, apparently we lost.
Last night we had our second game. The weather was great, though somewhat windy. Our team came out strong with an 8-3 lead at half time. I am still recovering from a cold, but I played hard and fast anyways. I had a number of good blocks and am very pleased with my performance overall. The other team came back hard in the second half scoring a number of quick points. Without losing our lead we were able to reorganize ourselves and seal the victory. I think the final score was 15-10. It was an incredible game, very well played by both sides.
As we continue to play together, and teach the newer players about how to achieve "flow", I think our team will look great. I'm looking forward to an exciting and victorious season.

Utah Symphony: Video Games Live
I went to see the Utah Symphony perform Video Games Live last night at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City. Does that sound like an incredibly nerdy thing to do? Yes, yes it does. But it was awesome, and would have been appreciated by any music lover, even without knowing the video games from which the music came. The entire performance is basically symphonic and choir arrangements of various popular video game music. The arrangements were created by veterans of the business who have won many awards for their incredible scores. Visual presentations accompanied each of the performances.
The evening opened with a quick fly through of the early days of gaming. A game of Pong was shown on the screen and the Symphony provided the bloops and bleeps of the bouncing "ball". It then moved through the more obscure games of the late 70s and 80s. After this opening piece the hosts of the show introduced the evening. I don't remember the exact order, but from there we listened to pieces involving Metal Gear Solid, Medal of Honor (set to actual footage from WWII), Super Mario Brothers (of course), Kingdom Hearts, Advent Rising, and Halo.
They also had with them the guy from this video playing Super Mario Brothers on the piano blindfolded. He also performed, without the blindfold, an arrangement of Final Fantasy music, as well as more intense SMB music. He was quite incredible.
For the encore they played "One Winged Angel (Sephiroth's Theme)" from Final Fantasy VII, an amazing song. And for a second encore they played the music from Castlevania. I really wish they had played more from Final Fantasy VII, specifically "Aerith's Theme" (Or "Aeris' Theme" depending on which spelling you use, the original US release had her name as Aeris, but the Japanese-English version used Aerith). That piece is incredible, one of my favorites, but alas it was only briefly heard during the piano arrangement mentioned above.
The crowd was more diverse than I had expected. There were a number of older couples there, who I now realize were likely season ticket holders and were probably somewhat unaware what the evening was going to be. There were also a number of girls there upon their own free will (meaning, not with husbands or boyfriends), including the two girls a few seats from me who were really into it the whole time, and I agree with the one in the red dress - they should have played more Final Fantasy music. (P.S. to those girls, you were hot, I'm a little confused as to how you haven't been snapped up by guys yet, hot gamer girls are not a common find.... just sayin'. So if you somehow happen to read this, and were one of the two very attractive girls sitting in the middle of the 2nd row on the 2nd tier for Saturday night's performance, send me an email and we'll talk ;-) Oh, and the married guy in front of me kept looking at your legs, hard to blame him though, the dress with the side slit up to the mid-thigh made it hard to look at anything else.)
Aaaaannyways, I enjoyed the show. I originally heard about these performance when they did their premiere show in 2003, I waited and vigilantly checked the website to hear about their tour, but no information came. Then came summer 2004 and I went home for the summer and forgot about it. I was very glad to hear about this performance from the program handed out at the Peer Gynt performance I went to a number of weeks ago. I had basically been waiting 5 years to see this show. So I'm glad I got to go, it was awesome.
Today, after church, I watched The Return of the King (extended edition, of course). I also cooked some brownies (I've been told my brownies are divine) and ate those with vanilla ice-cream. I haven't watched any LOTR in the past 4-5 months. The music in those films is incredible as well. I'm so glad that Peter Jackson did them justice and produced amazing works that can touch my emotions. Really, those movies are absolutely incredible if you understand the interaction and growth of the characters.

Reflection upon a Saturday
Today was quite busy. For some reason all of my weekends in March are scheduled up with events. They all filled up about mid-February. Normally my weekends are pretty relaxed, no strict plans, just sort of whatever comes up. But March, March is packed.
This morning was the Rex Lee Run. So I got up at 7:35 (my alarm was set for 8, but I couldn't sleep), ate a light breakfast and prepped for the run. About 30 minutes before start time I went out to drive over to the course. First I had to scrape ice off my windows, I was not pleased to be needing to scrape ice on a day I needed to run. My lungs don't do well in cold weather. In the winter I run in the indoor track because of this. The cold air hurts, and is too thin; it deprives me of desperately needed oxygen. Considering the fact that part of my left lung is stapled closed, and that my training hasn't been as intense this semester (so my VO2 max was not as high as it could be) I need all the oxygen I can get. Anyways, I went to the race and boy did I feel the lack of oxygen. When I finished my legs weren't even really tired, but I couldn't get enough oxygen. Which is really annoying. I wasn't even pushing the limits of my muscles, instead I was limited simply by the thinness of the air. I didn't do as well as last year, but (as I said) I didn't train as hard. I was able to run in under 26 minutes, not great compared to my ~23 minute run of 2007, but meh.
After the run I had to rush home and get all cleaned up to give a presentation in the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Spring Research Conference. Luckily my request for a time after noon was granted, as I didn't arrive on location until about 11:15. My presentation went well, and my movies worked this year, which was nice. The audience seemed to be engaged and interested, so hopefully the judges liked it too.
After that I bought some good lunch foods, went home, ate a whole bunch of food, watched some X-Files, and slept for a few hours. At which point it was time to begin preparations for the ward activity. We signed up to host some people for dinner for the ward activity, so Papa Funk and I got home from shopping (after he got out of work) around 5:30 and began cleaning up the house and cooking. We were all set at the specified time of 7:00. The ward was meeting at the chapel for appetizers at 6:30 and then was splitting up according to assignments to the host houses for dinner. We waited, and waited, figuring it was normal for people to be late. Finally around 7:40 we got tired of waiting and called the people in charge to find out what was going on. Apparently, since we were home cooking and not eating appetizers at 6:30 they assumed that we were no longer participating (despite the 4-5 phone calls throughout the week in which we confirmed our plans to make dinner). So they didn't send anyone to us. So we had food for about 10 people, and only 2 people to feed.
So Papa Funk and I said, "Screw it." and sat down to an excellent meal (it was very good), while watching an episode of X-Files. And now we have good food to eat for the next week or so....
Now I'm exhausted, and going to sleep.
P.S. to Olympus:
Where have you been all week! We've only talked for like 5 minutes. You need to stop having meetings and start only having one job again. ;-)

Disaster Zone and Life Update
My room is a complete disaster right now. Yesterday between work and dinner I had about an hour and a half, during which I went to my sister's to pick the last remnants of my stuff that was there. (Partially because I needed to pick up my suits, and partially because I just needed to do it.) So I got it home and basically just dumped stuff all over my room so that I could rest for 10 minutes before getting ready for dinner. Then upon returning home about midnight, I mostly just pulled the stuff off my bed and tossed it on the floor so that I could fall asleep. Maybe in the next hour or so I'll get the motivation to clean it up. Yah, I'll do that, put the doors back up, paint them white, and take some "after" pictures of my room. Ok, so maybe some of that will happen.
Anyways. I'll give a more complete account of my evening now that I'm conscious and functioning again:
A few weeks ago I signed up for the Computer Science Department Alumni Dinner. It's described as being for alumni and their families, but I figured I could RSVP for two and bring a date, since otherwise I probably wouldn't go. At the beginning of this week Krishna convinced me to buy tickets to the Big Bands Homecoming Dance, again I figured I would be able to get one of my friends to come along if all else failed. So I asked a girl if she'd like to go, she couldn't because she already had plans. So I asked another girl, same thing. And another, same thing. And another, same thing. At which point I was rather frustrated, annoyed, and becoming slightly depressed. So I made the second previous blog entry announcing my plight to my readers here on The Life of CPM blog. As all can see I did get a response from alishka babushka. She even went the whole nine yards and submitted a dating application. Ok, so honestly, the first thing I did was Facebooked her (I'm now using that as a verb, why not?), it may seem a little stalker-ish to Facebook someone, but come on, one must protect oneself from falling in with crazies, right?. Her Facebook information checked out, so I figured, "What the heck? I Might as well give this a shot."
So after picking up stuff from my sister's I got dressed in my tan suit from Banana Republic (I love that suit) with my burnt orange shirt and the chocolate brown with blue stripes tie that Poppa Funk gave me for my birthday. I even busted out the contacts, which I only wear on special occasions due to fact that they are my only remaining pair at the moment. I'm not one to boast about myself very often, but dang I looked good ;-). I went and picked up alishka at a quarter to 6. She had a fabulous red skirt with a black top, polished off with a rose in her hair. *ahem* Girl, you looked good.
Dinner went was quite good. We sat with my coworker and his family. Had Hawaiian barbecue with red juice. Watched some presentations, and the student animation "Las Pinatas". They then provided each alum with a DVD containing that short film, as well as the short film "Der Ostwind" which I saw last year at the student animation showcase, and I thought it was the best one there, and have wanted a copy of it for a while. After dinner we walked over to the HFAC and viewed the paintings on display. Then proceeded to the MOA to see the new "Cliche and Collusion" exhibit. It's an interesting look on how media affects our lives, and invades our thinking. The confusing messages that bombard us daily, the short attention spans we've developed as a society, and the suggestive marketing that pervades the media was all depicted in various ways. There are two full room video displays as part of the exhibit. One presents a journal style story of trip to a tropical island. The other was much more emotionally filled. It's a dark room with a mirror ball spinning, putting you in a romantic dance atmosphere. Then on three walls there are projectors displaying various phrases like "I've waited my whole life for this moment", "You are my love", "I'm so glad I finally found you" and the like. I think it would be the most romantic place in the world to propose to someone. So for anyone out there reading this and planning to ask that special question, it would be a great place.
After leaving the MOA we walked to the car to drop off the DVD so that I wouldn't have to hold it, or worry about it disappearing. Then we went in to the dance. alishka taught me the basic step to a couple of dances including the Triple Step and the Foxtrot. I did what I could to learn quickly, and hopefully didn't make too much of a fool of myself, as she's a real dancer. The dance was great, I really enjoyed the Big Band music (it was a full live band! like in Swing Kids!). I think the older style music made the evening feel more.... respectable. It's not the kind of music that you'll see people bumpin' and grindin' to. I dunno, something about it made the atmosphere seem more mature, which I really liked. We met up with Krishna and her date at the dance and chatted with them a little.
The whole evening was amazing. I really enjoyed myself, which I was very happy about since I was feeling pretty down about the whole thing beforehand. It was the first 'blind' date I'd ever been on, and probably the least awkward first date.
This morning I got up and rode in the Wells Fargo stagecoach in the Homecoming Parade. My roommate (Wells Fargo employee) was invited to bring some friends and ride, so we did. It was pretty fun. I never figured I'd ever be in a parade again after leaving High School with Marching Band, especially since I'd never even watched the Homecoming Parade before.
But anyways, that's my story. I'm feeling much better about life in general after the past 18 hours. Now I'm going to try to clean up my room. Oh, "Avatar: The Last Airbender" started again yesterday, so we'll watch that later this evening, so excited.

Hmm
I'm exhausted and about to fall asleep, so this will be very brief.
I had a wonderful evening with alishka babushka. I've never been on a blind date before, and that's basically what this ended up being, even if we set ourselves up. It really was an excellent night. Now, I'm going to sleep, and I think I'll sleep better tonight than I have all week.
Sometimes doing something a little crazy and out of character works out well.

Lacking conversation topics
So, I'd post another poem on here, but at the moment they're all packed away. So instead I'll just talk about the celestial events that I hope to observe this week:
Tuesday, 8/28/07: Total Lunar Eclipse:
I'll have to get up really early for this (mid-eclipse is 4:37 AM MDT), but it will be worth it. I haven't watched a total eclipse in many years now. Perhaps I'll even be able to convince a certain someone that they want to get up that early to watch too.
Saturday, 9/1/07: Alpha Aurigids Meteor Shower:
This one may or may not work out well for me. It's late (peak is 5:36 AM MDT) so if the sky starts getting too light I may not see anything much (Sunrise is 6:54 AM). I'm going to try anyways, so here's hoping. I'll probably start watching around 4-4:30 to try and see something.

Meat
The following conversation took place between CPM and his roommate Poppa Funk this evening:
CPM: Hey, Poppa Funk, have a good nap.
PF: Yah, I've been asleep for like 3 hours.
CPM: Wow. So, Guess what I had for lunch today. It was a type of animal meat.
PF: Did the animal have four legs?
CPM: No.
PF: hmm... ostrich?
CPM: HOW DID YOU GUESS THAT!
PF: You had ostrich? Where?
CPM: Yeah, I had an ostrich sandwich at Cabela's. And I've got half an elk sandwich in the fridge.
PF: That's awesome.
---
Poppa Funk and I have possibly been living together for too long, we can basically read each others' minds; it's a little scary sometimes.
---
I'm also still lacking in a place to live come end of August, so if anyone knows of somewhere outside the BYU bubble with a private room for under $325, let me know.
---
Work on Board 5.0 has officially started, and boy is everyone in for a treat when it gets finished.
CPM: Hey, Poppa Funk, have a good nap.
PF: Yah, I've been asleep for like 3 hours.
CPM: Wow. So, Guess what I had for lunch today. It was a type of animal meat.
PF: Did the animal have four legs?
CPM: No.
PF: hmm... ostrich?

Adventuring
I spent Thursday through Saturday in a bit of a depressed funk. But it's passed for the moment, and I think I'll be good through my coming escape to Las Vegas. I watched "Howl's Moving Castle" in the JFSB courtyard on Friday evening, it was actually quite good; the free ice cream novelties was a nice bonus to the free movie.
Lavish and I have decided to complete the Utah Valley Adventure Passport thingies that came in the mail a couple weeks ago. Yesterday we loaded up a car and drove the Alpine Loop from Provo Canyon to American Fork Canyon, stopping at Cascade Springs along the way. It was quite nice; clean, cool air; relaxing; beautiful views (I wanted to use the word vistas, but Microsoft has forever tainted it).
As soon as I get the pictures from her I'll put some up here; but they'll probably show up on her blog first.

Apartment Dynamics
I've just witnessed an interesting development in the apartment dynamics. See there's this roommate, E that I don't particularly get along with, and who's a little anal about things, like my whistling in my room with my door closed while he's trying to sleep - in his room - 20 feet down the hall - with his door closed. So anyways he gets out of bed to tell people to stop doing whatever it is that's bothering him at the moment. He just came into the living room to tell the people watching tv to be quiet, but when he saw it was roommate J, he didn't say anything and instead just turned around and went back to bed. So apparently E is afraid of J, interesting...
Final Cut was awesome, Lexi and I went to Program A on Thursday night. Our favorite was Der Ostwind.
Dancesport was also quite amazing. We went and saw my roommate D perform for cha-cha, quickstep, and pasa doble. He did quite well, and reached semi-finals for pasa doble, and the finals for quickstep.
On Saturday I made an Egyptian Chocolate Cake, modified to contain hot chocolate and nutmeg instead of coffee, it's pretty good.
